Vintage Idea #1 -Gameboards

Have a lot of old board games hanging around? Well , yank them out of your closet, attic, parents closets and ask your friends if you can take theirs off their hands.

Stack (in-good condition boxes) on a coffee table, in your TV armoir, ona bookshelf, or next to your couch. (as long as little ones aren't around!)

If the boxes are too shabby, pull out all the pieces and put them into glass mason jars. (Monopoly characters and houses in one, Sorry pieces, Life people, building and cars. Line the jars up on your bookshelves or put in deeper dishes on the coffee table.

Create a vintage game collection area in your office, den or game room. I personally do not like the boards mounted on the wall - it is more fun if people can pick up the pieces or envision them as they once were used and be inspired to play a good old-fashioned round of Sorry!

Use game boards as place mats on game night, with a vintage bowl in the center filled with dice or game movers.

Most games now come packed new but in a vintage style and I just love that! "newly vintaged".

Why am I so Anxious?

OK, so I am on a vacation day today, I got all 8 kids and my husband out the door, my house is 1/2 way clean, I have a lunch date with my sister in law, why am I so anxious? why can't I just relax and enjoy my day off?? What is wrong with me? Could it be that I am really never on vacation from work? I still have to answer the phone when it rings, I am on-call 24/7. I got harassed this morning by someone who works for me, so that put me on edge. The house is way too quiet! I think what I will do is go out on my front porch (in my jammies-with my glasses on) and drink my coffee, and secretly smoke a cigarette. Maybe that will help? Why can't I just relax? There are a lot of strange noises that come from the house when you are completely alone in it, and let me tell you this NEVER happens! I am alone in my house maybe 3 times per year max... Damn, I should just go back to bed, but I am going to go out to lunch! It was nice of my sister in law to take me - at least I can say I did something other than clean on my vacation day. I can do this, I can put work out of my mind, they are fine without me, I can push the worries out of my head, I can, I can! - I better go have that cigarette now!!!!!!!

Counting Down

WOW! This weekend really went by slowly! Maybe I should offer to watch 3 kids more often? NOT! Actually, it went good, no major traumas and no injuries. We went through a lot of food - boys are hungry about every 2 hours. I kept my tone even and tried not to yell. I listened to a lot of shooting sounds, negotiating, strange mouth noises, far-fetched stories, and bribery. I am practicing my heavy breathing exercises so that I do not obsess about having to clean the bathroom, wash all the blankets, scrub the floors and wipe down the walls. I took a vacation day just so I could spend it cleaning up after this weekend, but now my sister-in-law has invited me out to lunch - FREE Lunch! So, I am now obsessing about when I will get the bathroom cleaned, the floors scrubbed, and the laundry done. If I wake up at 5am, and shower first, I can be ready when I have to get the 6 kids up and greet the other 2 we watch, then once they go to school clean for 2 hours before I have to meet her for lunch. Then when I get back from lunch I may have an hour to clean before the kids get home from school. SEE?? I am seriously MAD!
I did serve something that was a big hit at lunch today. You can only get the recipe if you attend a pampered chef show, but this is all you do, and you will be a hero!:

Get out your muffin tins
Take a bag of tater tots and put about 3 in each tin.
Take something (insert the pampered chef tool that I forgot what it was called) and really squish those tater tots down in the pan.
Bake at about 450 til sizzling and not quite crispy.
Sprinkle Shredded Cheddar Cheese in each tin and already cooked bacon bits on top.
Bake for another 5 minutes or so.
Use a small utensil to scoop out (should come out all together) and top with sour cream!
Mini Loaded Baked Potatoes!

You may not have known this

I recently found out that a lot of people I work with had no idea about this money saver. Our company does not offer vision benefits, however, we do have health insurance. Typically (and you have to read your plan) your health insurance will cover 1 eye exam per year as long as the Dr. is covered in your plan. (Typically an opthamologist not an optometrist) You will need an eye exam in order to purchase glasses and contacts, but at least a portion of your cost is covered!

It's Bad when Sleeping-in is 6am!

I always say, "I am going to sleep-in this weekend." Since I am up at 4:15am Monday through Friday, I usually do not sleep past 7am, and today I am up at 6am! Oh well, it does give me some quiet time. I am a reality TV junkie. It's the only TV I watch. I do not watch any sitcom's or drama's, unless you count my Soap - General Hospital that I have been watching since I can remember, because my Mom also watched it. Isn't that funny? The only shows that have lasted through time are Soaps? I am a secret watcher (no one knows except my Mom and a few other secret watchers) Thank goodness for DVR or TiVo. I am currently watching:
Big Brother - it's OK this year- a new concept that should make it interesting. A show I have looked forward to each summer and was surprised it is on this winter.
Survivor - This one is kind of slipping down on my must-see list. Hasn't been very good for awhile.
Jon & Kate Plus 8 - I LOVE this! I stumbled upon it when I was sick with the flu over Christmas and watched the marathon. My 5 and 7 year old daughters also love this show! I get very inspired when I watch this show. I wish I lived near them, it makes me want to offer help.
American Idol - Again, slipping down on my list. I just am not into BIG singers and this is typically who wins. The show I loved that was more like me was ROCK STAR - now those were good singers!
Celebrity Apprentice -It's good this season! I love hating Omarosa!
Real World/Road Rules Challenge - Yes, living vicariously through the younger people! I still consider myself their age. Fun for some ridiculous drama!
Dancing with the Stars - Can't wait til March! Not sure I am too excited about the stars this time? but then I think I say that every time and end up really loving them all.
Ghost Hunters - Where have you been - can't seem to find any new episodes? I like this, my kids do too. We tried Paranormal State, and the stories are good, but they never seem to catch anything.
The Bachelor - I'll catch this when I can, but I do not worry if I miss something. The women are fun to make fun of!
Flip this House - I really miss the North Carolina group and the husband and wife team in Texas- they haven't been on lately?

This list is getting pathetic! I am not sure there is a reality show I haven't seen? I am not a big fan of the ones on E!, though. I like them a little more tame. People say it isn't reality, but the ones I really enjoy seem to be pretty real. To me, it's better than watching things that would never happen to normal people.

Well, I just have the rest of today and tomorrow morning with 6 kids. I can do this, I can do this! Thankfully the movie last night was a big hit ( and it was good they were sent with money and I stayed home so we were only paying for 2 tickets) Honestly, the boys are really sweet! Their parents should be really proud of them, and I should be proud of me too! I think it is my kids making all the noise and creating the drama, because we have guests of course!

Six Kids for the weekend

My husband says, I can't say NO, unless it is to him and he's right! He said, "let's practice - Can we go and have sex right now?" - I said, " NO". He said, can I grope you while you are doing the dishes?" and I said "NO". But I didn't say No, when my son's friends parents called and asked could we watch their three boy's for a long weekend so they could go on a trip. I shouldn't have a problem with this. I should love that they trust us, that their kids like my kids. We have 3, so what's 3 more?? But I think I hav OCD, I work 50++ hours a week, and I really can't stand the sounds of kids yelling, banging doors, punching the piano keys and listening to shooting games. Right now, I am sitting in my quiet house, while my husband has them at the movies. Of course this couldn't have happened at a worse time. If we just had the money to entertain them all properly. We are broke. Barely keeping our heads above water. But, we don't appear as though that is our situation - that is why I thought it was important to start this blog - maybe someone else is in this situation and no one else knows? How to get by, being broke, but not looking like you are! And how do you ever repay the kindness of some people??

Also , today was the "Cinderella ball" for my two girls. Thankfully, my sister-in-law and niece came over and helped me curl their hair. A few weeks ago I was obsessing about this ball. What would they wear? How could we afford it? I made it work though. My 7yr old wore the same dress she wore the year before (despite my initial hesitation, no one remembered that was the same dress - they are only thinking about their own dresses, not anyone else's) her shoes still fit - barely, but her toes weren't hanging off! Yes, it's February and her dress was sleeveless, but I put a cute short sweater over the dress and it worked! My 5yr old, wore a dress that was given to us by a family that must have dressed up for everything, and bought their dresses from a designer boutique!- They had plenty to spare! I only had to buy her shoes, and we got them at Walmart on clearance. You wouldn't believe that sometimes you can find some really cute girls dress shoes there that would cost a fortune somewhere else, yet look the same. With their hair all done up, they looked great! I painted their nails the night before which they loved, gave them a long bubble bath in the morning, put paper Do Not Disturb Signs on the bathroom door, and let them eat cookies in the tub! We had to provide a dish, -store-bought cookies, because my husband says people are leery of eating things from other people's kitchens anyway. The girls had a fantastic time. The Dad's let them slide up and down the school ramp the whole time, so it was a good thing we didn't spend any money on their dresses anyway.
My husband and I made a bit of a life change after he was diagnosed with MS 2 years ago. He is currently fine, just some slight symptoms after his first and pretty dramatic episode. But we decided to make a big move closer to family, I changed my job to make more money, but I work a lot more hours and I have to say, harder than I ever have in my whole life as a Director and Quality Manager for a staffing company. I wanted my husband to be able to stay home with our kids, and for awhile it worked out great, but life caught up to us and one income wasn't cutting it anymore. He now watches 2 kids in the morning for a small amount of money, has a paper route, sells real estate and just recently got a part time job while the kids are in school, 3 days a week in a machine shop. Wouldn't you know, it still doesn't cover the bills? But most importantly, our kids have one of us all the time, and we manage to have a lot of fun together. Our house is clean and neat, and we take care of the things we have.
Although, there are many times I want to just run out and shop for hours, but I can't. I figured out, that decorating my house with a hint of vintage, really hides the flaws and actually makes it look pretty classy. I will share all my tips! For starters, my absolute favorite site for a quick vintage fix is jackandfriends.com I decorate my walls with their vintage tin signs and their kitchen bowls are awesome! Check out their prices!!! It's a great quick-shopping-fix and you won't see anyone else with the same stuff!

Til' we meet again....
